Advance Your Behavioral Health Career: Understanding the QMHP

When browsing open positions here at Alleghany Highlands Community Services (AHCS), you will frequently see a requirement to be a QMHP (Qualified Mental Health Professional).

Whether you are a professional looking to transition into community mental health, an experienced practitioner relocating to Virginia, or a recent graduate with a degree in the social sciences, navigating state credentials is a vital part of your career journey. We are here to break down exactly what a QMHP is, how Virginia’s regulations work, and how AHCS partners with you to achieve and maintain your registration.

What is a QMHP?

In Virginia, a QMHP is a formal registration issued by the Virginia Board of Counseling. It is a mandatory credential for professionals who provide essential, direct behavioral health services—such as case management, crisis intervention, and mental health skill-building—to individuals navigating mental health diagnoses in our community.

The Unified QMHP Track: Virginia utilizes a streamlined, single QMHP registration system that consolidates what used to be separate tracks for adult (QMHP-A) and child (QMHP-C) services. This unified credential gives you greater professional versatility across different age groups and programs.

The Pathway to Becoming a Registered QMHP

Earning your registration is a mix of the right education, a core training component, and hands-on clinical experience.

  1. Educational Requirements

You qualify for the standard pathway if you hold a bachelor’s degree (or higher) from an accredited college in a human services or related field (such as Psychology, Social Work, Sociology, Counseling, or Special Education).

Have an unrelated degree? You can still qualify! You will just need at least 15 credits of human services coursework alongside your clinical experience.

  1. The "QMHP-Trainee" (QMHP-T) Track

If you have the right education but still need to accumulate your supervised clinical hours, the state provides a QMHP-Trainee registration. This allows you to legally practice and earn your hours while employed.

  • You complete 60 hours of didactic education training (covering core topics like ethics, boundaries, and behavioral health fundamentals) through a board-approved provider.
  • You register as a QMHP-T through the Virginia Department of Health Professions portal.
  • Once registered as a Trainee, you are legally qualified to step into roles that build toward full certification.
  1. Earning Full Registration

To transition from a Trainee to a fully registered QMHP, you must document 1,500 hours of supervised, direct clinical experience completed within the five years prior to your application.

  • Practicum/Internship Hours: Any hours you completed during a clinical practicum or internship can count directly toward this total, provided they meet the Board's supervision criteria.

What is a QMHP and how does it impact my career eligibility?
In Virginia and other states, mental health service providers require new employees to be QMHP-credentialed. For graduates with only an undergraduate social science degree, such as psychology or family and child development, this requirement presents a challenge when applying for jobs in the field. When looking at entry level positions, one will often see “1 year of experience” as a requirement; this requirement usually refers to QMHP qualification.

How do I become QMHP Qualified?
If you have a human service related degree and have at least 2,000 hours (i.e., 1 year of full-time work experience) of paid or internship-related work you may be qualified as a QMHP.

QMHP-A (Qualified Mental Health Professional-Adult): A person in the human services field who is trained and experienced in providing psychiatric or mental health services to adults who have a mental illness. For a student with a bachelor’s degree in a social sciences field the requirements for QMHP-A include at least a bachelor’s degree in human services or related field from an accredited college and at least one year of clinical experience providing direct services to individuals with a diagnosis of mental illness.

QMHP-C (Qualified Mental Health Professional-Child): A person in the human services field who is trained and experienced in providing psychiatric or mental health services to children who have a mental illness. For a student with a bachelor’s degree in a social sciences field the requirements for QMHP-C include at least a bachelor’s degree in a human services field or in special education from an accredited college and at least one year of clinical experience with children and adolescents.

What qualifies as an appropriate degree and clinical experience?
Human services degree: Includes social work, psychology, psychiatric rehabilitation, sociology, counseling, vocational rehabilitation, human services counseling, or other degrees deemed equivalent to those described.

Clinical Experience: Includes providing direct behavioral mental health services and treatment to individuals. In addition, the supervising clinician must be appropriately credentialed for the field (for example, being licensed, QMHP qualified, or other having other relevant certifications). The Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Development Services determines this
