We’ve all experienced this feeling at some point. Anger is a normal emotion but when it starts to consume you and become uncontrollable and destructive, it is time to get help. Uncontrolled anger can ruin relationships and ruin your quality of life. Learning anger management by identifying an anger problem and seeking help is a healthy step towards a better life.
Anger can be caused by your internal thoughts (ex: memories of a traumatic event), or external factors (ex: a fight with a friend), feelings of vulnerability, hurt or shame.
Psychologists believe that the people who have a low tolerance for frustration have the most trouble controlling their rage. These people also have a tendency to dislike change and are unable to adapt to new situations or environments. According to the American Psychological Association, there is evidence that some people are, in fact, born with the problem. For others, uncontrolled anger is actually a learned behavior.
Know your triggers. A Horizon clinician can help you come up with an anger management plan by identifying those triggers and teaching you how to manage them. Controlling and dealing with your anger is a tough but satisfying accomplishment and can positively change your life and the lives of the people around you.
